Where we are today

The Sorrel Horse public house is owned by over 170 shareholders in the registered company, The Sorrel Horse Shottisham Ltd. We have raised to date over £380,500 towards the target of £450,000 share capital. The purchase took place at 17.25 on 25th August 2011 after a 10 week campaign to raise the funds necessary for the freehold acquisition.

Shares cost £500 each with the maximum individual investment capped at 45 shares, limiting any one individual to no more than a 5% shareholding once the target figure is achieved. There are only 139 shares still to be sold.

To encourage shareholder investment we have HMRC (Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs) approval that
The Sorrel Horse Shottisham Ltd
is eligible for EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) tax relief of 30%
.

In simple terms; providing shares are held for 3 years and the shareholder is also a tax payer; for every £1,000 invested, a tax rebate of £300 can be sought  from HMRC by the investor in the tax year in which shares were bought.

Please click here for more information on HMRC's EIS conditions.

The company strongly encourages you to seek your own independent advice regarding financial or tax planning before purchasing shares and to be aware that the value of shares can go down as well as up.

Funds invested after the purchase are intended for capital projects identified within our prospectus, such as re-thatching, kitchen
and toilet upgrades and summer use of the Pightle behind the pub.

The pub business will be run as a stand-alone company with the aim of returning dividends to investors and re-investing profits back into the business. We have published a number of documents to support the project including a Business Plan, Memorandum of Articles, the site plan and survey, all of which can be downloaded by clicking here.

Shareholder investment is not limited just to ‘locals’ as we recognise that much of the future success of the pub will be as a result of visiting trade. Consequently we are very keen to encourage non-local investment but we do intend to ensure that the pub’s future serves the needs of the local community and as such we have an aspiration that over 50% of shareholders should have a local connection.

How we got to this stage

In Spring 2011 an opportunity arose to purchase The Sorrel Horse pub business. As is often the case a chat amongst a few people snowballed and a loose plan was quickly set in motion to try to secure the necessary funding. From day 1 it’s been a widely held principle that if a ‘community lead’ purchase could be established, this would not only secure an absolutely vital community asset but also give the local community a significant controlling interest in the future direction, destiny and development of the pub.

In just 4 months (by the date of purchase) we have evolved from a loose group of people with a similar ambition, to a formal company with significant shareholder funds and that has now realised the company’s immediate ambition – the acquisition of the pub.

Now the hard work really starts – but we have the pub, and with it an enormous amount of enthusiasm, goodwill and support from the pub staff, pub customers, shareholders, our fantastic village and the wider community.

Our exposure through BBC Look East, BBC Radio Suffolk, East Anglian Daily Times, The Financial Times and now Sky Newshas publicised our project widely and captured the imagination of many potential investors who both recognise the importance of retaining our local heritage, whilst offering a viable investment opportunity which is more accessible than many other share investments might be.
